Frequently asked questions

Mixing:

How can I send you my files for mixing?
You can use any file sharing/cloud service of your choice and send me the download link. I can also send you an upload link for my cloud.

In which format should they be?
A high resolution audio format, preferably WAV or AIF, with 24 bit and a sample rate of 48k is common.  96k is even better to work with, especially for analog processing.  If your project does not match these numbers (higher or lower) don't worry.  Leave it like it is, as converting already recorded material to higher sample and bitrates won't improve the quality, while converting to lower resolutions will reduce the quality. You should avoid MP3 at all costs, though. Converting an MP3 into a WAV or AIFF file also does not improve the quality.

Mastering / Stem Mastering:

Is stem mastering better than stereo mastering?
Not necessarily. Your mix engineer will decide it while mixing, or the mastering engineer can recommend it after listening to the stereo mix. For some material it can be better to give the mastering engineer more control over the levels, dynamics and EQing of the different groups/stems, to achieve a better result.

How can I send you my files for mastering?
You can use any file sharing/cloud service of your choice and send me the download link. I can also send you an upload link for my cloud.

In which format should they be?
24 bit or 32 bit floating point stereo interleaved WAV or AIF.  The sample rate of the mix should be the same as your project. A conversion to higher sample rates does not bring any improvements to the source material..

Can I use FX on the individual tracks?
Please leave the material untreated, because otherwise there are very limited options for the mixing process. Especially reverbs, delays and dynamic processing on individual tracks make it hard to create a well-balanced mix. If there is a special FX, which is very important for the song, please send two versions of the file (wet/dry) for my orientation.

What level should the mix have and can I use master bus compression?
My recommendation is to stay between -3 and -6 dBFS. At 24 bit this is a must, though. The most important is to avoid clipping (stay under 0dBFS). You should not use anything on your master bus, which affects the loudness of the track and crushes the dynamic range (limiters, enhancers, clippers, normalization). A light bus compression for the "mix glue" or sound feel can stay in the mix., if that's important for your mix engineer.

How do I receive my final mixes?
I'll send you a download link for my cloud..

What if I don't like a mix?
In order to understand your musical vision, you are welcome to send me remarks and comments about the sonic image you have in mind, along with your track upload. This is not a must, though. You can leave it all up to me. If you are not satisfied with the first result, there are 2 revisions included. In order to keep up an efficient workflow, send all your remarks and desired changes in one mail per revision. 99% of the mixes I did so far, have been finished within the range of zero to 2 revisions. Please note that if you send new tracks for a song after it has been mixed or approved, this is not considered as a revision. So please make sure, that the tracks you send me, are definitely the final versions.. If there is a case where I am not satisfied with a mix, the revision will be always free of charge.

Can I personally attend a mixing session?
Most of the work I do is online,  so I am able to work with clients worldwide. My rates are based on the efficient workflow I have, when working alone. Attended sessions always take way more time, as every step has to be explained and discussed. My experience is, that an attended session will not bring any improvement to the mix, often it is the opposite. The reason is mostly, that the working environment as well as the acoustics, monitoring etc. is new for the client. Studio monitors are made for critical listening, not  to make you feel good. They identify problems and also show you that everything is great - if you know them well. If clients are listening to the mixes at home in the environment and gear they know best, it will have a better impact on the result, because they can judge and give a feedback much easier. If you still want to attend a session, please contact me so we can discuss if and under which conditions it can be possible.

Do you offer a free mix in order to get a job?
No, I don't offer any free mixes for you to decide if you want me to mix your project. However, if you give me one song to decide wether I should mix your album or further songs, you'll get a better rate for the track afterwards when I get the job (see my rates).

What kind of information do you need?
I'f your project is an album or EP, I need a list with the following information: artist name, album title, song titles, track order and ISRC codes (if you have them). Please make sure that all is written correctly. I also have to know in which formats you want to release your music: online, CD or vinyl.
If you have any specific requests for the mastering, for example loudness, frequency image or reference tracks, please send them together with the mixes. Of course you can also leave it all up to me.

How do I receive my final master?
I'll send you a download link for my cloud. It'll be in the appropriate release format: for online releases you'll receive the mastered WAV files, for CD releases a DDP Image, which then can be sent to the pressing plant. If you wish, I can also write a physical master CD for you. For vinyl releases the format depends on your pressing plant. Most common are 24bit WAV Files for each side but some also use the DDP Image as a template.

What if I don't like a master?
If you are not satisfied with the first result, there are 2 revisions included.
99% of the masters I did so far, have been finished within the range of zero to 2 revisions. Please note that if you send new mixes of a song after the first mastering, this is not considered as a revision. So please make sure, that the mix you send me is definitely the final version.. If there is a case where I am not satisfied with a master, the revision will be always free of charge.
